Tank mount

Also known as: motorcycle tank mount, fuel tank mount

A camera mount on the fuel tank of a motorcycle, often with suction or magnets, giving a low view of the rider body, controls and the road ahead.

Updated

What it means

A tank mount places the camera on top of the fuel tank, between the rider and the handlebars. Facing forward, it shows the dashboard, the bars and the road rushing toward the bike. Facing back, it shows the rider body position, hands on the controls and the visor, which is great for track days and touring vlogs.

Mounts use strong suction cups on painted tanks, magnets on steel tanks, or bases that attach to tank bag rings. Each option has its own limits, so the right choice depends on the bike and the tank material.

It offers a perspective that a helmet or chin mount cannot: the bike and rider together, filmed from very close.

How it works in practice

Clean the tank surface before mounting, and use protective film under suction or magnets to avoid scratches. Keep the arm short so the camera sits low and does not block the dashboard or interfere with steering.

A rear-facing tank camera during cornering shows lean, body position and knee down moments on track, and pairs well with a forward-facing handlebar camera for a two-angle edit. Always add a tether in case the mount releases.

Use a fast shutter and strong stabilization, since engine vibration travels through the tank and into every frame.

What to watch out for

Engine vibration can cause jello and blur, especially on single and twin cylinder bikes. Test different speeds and check the footage before a long ride.

Magnets do not work on plastic or aluminum tanks, and suction cups struggle on textured or curved surfaces. Check what your tank is made of before buying a mount.

Never mount in a way that restricts steering, blocks the view of instruments or could hit the rider in a crash or under hard braking. Safety and control always come first, and local rules on vehicle mounts may apply.
