Backpack mount

Also known as: shoulder strap mount, rucksack mount

A camera clamped to a pack strap or the top of a backpack, giving a stable over the shoulder view without anything touching the rider.

What it means

A backpack mount puts the camera on luggage rather than on the body. The strap sits across the chest and shoulder, so the camera rides above and slightly behind the subject with the pack absorbing some movement.

The resulting angle is distinctive. It looks past the rider rather than from the rider, which gives a sense of place that a Chest mount cannot because the subject and the landscape are both in frame.

It suits activities where a helmet or chest position is impractical. Hiking, ski touring and climbing all involve a pack anyway, and the mount adds no separate harness to carry.

How it works in practice

Tightening the strap matters more than the mount itself. A loose pack moves independently of the body and the camera inherits every bit of that, which electronic stabilisation then has to absorb.

Aiming slightly down and forward keeps the horizon sensible. A camera pointed level on a strap that sits at an angle produces a tilt that persists through the whole recording.

Checking the frame with the pack loaded is worth the minute, because an empty pack sits differently and Horizon Lock cannot correct an aim that was wrong to begin with.

What to watch out for

The pack itself intruding into frame is the most common fault. A strap, a buckle or the top of the bag in the corner of every shot is unfixable afterwards.

Clothing noise is the audio equivalent. A microphone against a jacket records rustle rather than Ambient sound, which no amount of filtering turns back into usable sound.

Walking footage from a strap also has a characteristic bounce at stride frequency, and that regular oscillation is exactly what Shake detection penalises even though the shot is otherwise fine. Shortening the strap reduces it more than any setting on the camera does.

How RawClip handles it

Over the shoulder angles are weighted as establishing material rather than as action, since they show the place and the subject together. Footage with a strap or a buckle in the corner of frame scores lower on framing.
