DJI Mimo

Also known as: Mimo, DJI companion app

The phone application for DJI cameras and gimbals, used to control them, transfer footage and apply the maker own processing.

Updated

What it means

Mimo is the companion application rather than an editor in its own right. It pairs with the camera, provides a remote viewfinder, transfers clips to the phone and offers some automatic editing on top of that, in the manner of a Template-based editing tool.

Its real significance is as a gateway. Certain processing and certain transfer paths are only available through it, which makes it part of the workflow rather than an optional convenience.

It occupies the same position in the DJI ecosystem that GoPro Quik does for GoPro, and both share the same characteristic: convenient on a phone, limiting for anything beyond a quick share.

How it works in practice

Transferring the originals rather than the application versions is what matters for later editing. Phone transfers are frequently re-encoded or downscaled, and the full quality file stays on the card.

Using it as a viewfinder while setting up a mount is where it genuinely helps. Framing an Action camera by guesswork is the usual failure, and a phone preview removes it.

Checking what the transfer produced before wiping the card is the habit worth keeping, since a smaller file on the phone is not the same recording the camera made.

What to watch out for

Automatic edits made on a phone are convenient and discard the source. A rendered result is not a project, so decisions made there cannot be revised later from the original footage.

Transfers over a wireless link are also slow enough that a long session is impractical, and giving up halfway leaves an unclear idea of what has actually been copied.

Relying on the application as the only copy is the real risk. A phone is not a backup, and Cloud backup through a maker service is a different thing from having the originals somewhere safe.

How RawClip handles it

Uploading the camera originals rather than phone exports makes a visible difference to the result, because application transfers are frequently re-encoded and smaller than what was recorded. The analysis works best on the files the camera itself wrote to the card.
