Best moments

Also known as: highlights, top moments

The handful of seconds in a session worth keeping, and the thing any highlight edit exists to find inside hours of recording.

Updated

What it means

A long session contains a very small amount of usable material. Hours of recording reduce to a few dozen moments, and the rest is approach, waiting and recovery. The ratio is worse than anybody expects.

What counts as a moment is specific. Something happens, it reads on screen, and it ends cleanly enough to cut. All three are required; a spectacular crash that leaves frame is not a moment.

The task is subtraction, not addition. A Highlight reel is defined by what it leaves out, which is why Automatic highlight detection is framed as a filtering problem rather than a creative one.

How it works in practice

Marking them while filming saves hours. A HiLight tag pressed on the camera leaves a pointer in the file, and the pointer is worth more than any memory of the day.

Review goes fast when it is structured. One pass to find candidates, a second to compare the duplicates, and nothing is watched in full more than once. Watching a card twice is a day lost.

Context has to come with the moment. A trick with no approach and no landing reads as an unexplained fragment, so a candidate usually starts earlier than the moment itself.

What to watch out for

Attachment distorts judgement. The clip a rider remembers as the best of the day is frequently not the one that plays best, and the gap between the two is entirely normal.

Repeats are harder to spot than they look. Four attempts at the same feature are four moments to a rider and one to a viewer, which is what Duplicate shot detection exists for.

Quality disqualifies more candidates than content does. A great moment that is out of focus, dark or shaking is still unusable, and Blur detection removes it before anybody argues.

How RawClip handles it

Finding these is the whole job: footage is analysed for action, composition and picture quality, and the surviving moments are ordered into a sequence against music. Hours of approach and waiting never reach the result, which is the part a person would otherwise watch through.
