Gooseneck mount

Also known as: flexible arm, gooseneck arm, bendy arm

A flexible, bendable arm that holds a camera at an adjustable angle and position, used with clamps or bases for creative and hard-to-reach shots.

What it means

A gooseneck is a segmented or coiled metal arm that bends into any shape and holds it. Attached to a clamp, a suction cup or a base, it lets you place the camera exactly where you want, around obstacles, over a table or out from a rail.

Goosenecks are popular for desk setups, car interiors, bike handlebars and filming hands at work, such as tying knots, tuning a bike or cooking at camp. The freedom to fine-tune the angle without moving the base is their main strength.

The trade-off is stiffness. The longer and thinner the arm, the more it sways with vibration or wind.

How it works in practice

Use the shortest gooseneck that reaches the angle you need, and bend it into a compact shape rather than a long straight line. Bracing the arm against a solid surface reduces wobble very noticeably in practice.

For calm scenes, such as a campfire, a workshop or a webcam setup, a gooseneck gives precise framing. For action, use it only on stable bases with little vibration, and rely on stabilization to smooth what remains.

Check the angle after a few minutes of recording, since heavier cameras can make long arms droop over time, ruining a carefully framed shot.

What to watch out for

Goosenecks sag under heavy setups, especially with a media frame or light attached. Choose an arm rated for the weight, or support it with a second clamp or a small block underneath.

Vibration turns a flexible arm into a spring. On bikes, motorcycles and cars, footage can wobble badly. Use rigid mounts for anything with an engine or rough terrain, such as a roll bar clamp.

Cheap arms lose stiffness after repeated bending and slowly stop holding their position. Replace worn arms before they ruin an important shot, and keep a spare in the bag on long trips.
