Mountain biking

Also known as: MTB, mountain bike riding

Riding off-road on a bicycle, which produces more footage per hour than almost any other discipline because the camera runs continuously.

What it means

Mountain biking is the umbrella over several quite different things. Downhill, Enduro, trail riding and dirt jumping all share the same equipment and share almost nothing at all about how they get filmed.

What they have in common is volume. A camera on a helmet or a chest records a whole run rather than an attempt, so a single afternoon produces hours rather than minutes of material to deal with.

The subject moves through terrain rather than performing in one place. That makes positioning harder than in a skatepark and it makes a worn camera more valuable here than almost anywhere else.

How it works in practice

One feature filmed properly beats a whole trail filmed badly. A corner or a jump from two positions produces an intercuttable section, where a pan down a trail produces one wide shot.

A worn camera covers the run and an external camera covers the scale. Both of them are needed, and the worn one is the only coverage that definitely exists once the session is over.

Stopping the camera between runs is the single highest-value habit. It changes Hours of footage dramatically and removes most of the reviewing that nobody actually wants to sit through.

What to watch out for

The volume defeats most people. Hours of continuous recording per session is exactly what produces a Footage backlog, and the cameras keep getting better at making more of it every year.

Trees ruin exposure all day. Dappled light swings constantly, so fixed settings matter more here than in open terrain, where a camera on automatic pumps through every run.

Mounted footage flattens everything. A wide lens on a helmet makes a steep trail look like a path, which is why the external angles are the ones that carry the real difficulty of a line.

How RawClip handles it

Long continuous runs are exactly the input this is built for: the moments get found inside the file rather than needing to be separated first, and the pedalling between them is filtered out as dead time without anybody watching it.
