Vlog edit

Also known as: vlog, video blog edit

An edit built around a person talking to camera, where speech carries the structure and the action footage becomes illustration.

Updated

What it means

A vlog is organised by narration rather than by action. Somebody explains the day, and the clips exist to show what they are describing, which inverts the usual relationship. Picture serves the words here rather than the reverse.

Speech sets the cut points. Picture is laid over a continuous voice track, so a J-cut and L-cut pattern does most of the work and the sound never stops moving forward.

The form tolerates weaker footage. A shaky clip under a clear explanation is fine, where the same clip in a Highlight reel would be discarded outright on quality alone.

How it works in practice

The talking track is edited first. Removing pauses, repetitions and false starts produces a spine, and the footage is placed against that rather than the other way round. The spine comes first and the pictures follow it.

Auto captions are close to mandatory. Much of the audience watches with the sound off, and speech that is not on screen as text is speech that nobody actually receives.

Audio quality matters more than picture. An External microphone changes a vlog more than any camera upgrade, because the whole form depends on being understood without any effort at all.

What to watch out for

Dead air is the main failure. Any passage where neither speech nor action is doing anything is Dead time, and a vlog accumulates it faster than other formats manage to.

Repetition hides in speech. The same point explained twice reads as padding, and it is far harder to spot by ear than a repeated shot is by eye on a timeline.

Added sound can overwhelm it. A Sound effect under narration competes with the voice, so anything placed there has to sit well below the speech or not be there at all.

How RawClip handles it

An automatic highlight is built from action rather than from narration, so it produces the footage side of a vlog rather than the whole piece. The result works as an illustrated section inside a talking edit, with ordinary Video editing joining the two.

Skip the editing. Keep the best moments.

Upload your raw footage and get a finished highlight in 4K and 1080p - no timeline, no editing skills.
